Why did George Lucas not include this scene in either the original or remastered editions? It is not only dour shads of awesome, but beteer establishes the theme that Luke is teetering even more perilously close to the dark side than we suspect.
Luke is acting distant, dressing all in black, and using his jedi powers to manipulate powers to manipulate others, but we never really get the impression we aresupposed to--Luke may betray his friends and join up with his father. The deleted scene would have introduced the element of Darth Vader mentally pushing Luke to the dark side from the beginning. We would have been on guard about Luke’s inner conflict the entire time. This would have added an extra layer to Return of the Jedi.
Luke building his new light saber is totally cool, too.
The deleted scene was shown at Star Wars Celebration V this weekend. It will be included on the Blue-Ray editions of the trilogy to be released in 2011.
