All Time Favorites # 1--Reese Witherspoon
Number one on my all time favorites list should come as no shock to anyone who has been paying attention. I am the one who made burnt offerings in the name of Abby Cornish when Ryan Philippe got caught having an affair, so yeah, I am emotionally invested.I have been a fan since her role in the Man in the Moon television movie back in her early teen years. I have been a stalker since 1999’s Cruel Intentions. Since then, we have had a few ups and downs as she refuses to acknowledge the undying love for me that I know is buried deep within her heart, but I am a man of infinite patience.
But seriously, she is a fine actress and very attractive woman. She has been in a number of films that have resonated with me at just the right time. Election, for one, came after some absurd experiences working in political campaigns and Legally Blonde during my first year of law school. Speaking of, I faced no argument more brutal in law school than defending Pleasatville from the fundamentalist Christians who saw it as the epitome of all that is celluloid evil. Then again, a fair amount of Regent University’s student body see satanic messages in their alphabet soup, so it is best just to role with it.
There is no way I could have chosen anyone else as my all time favorite.

So Far, So Good
We are now over thirteen hours into 2004 and nothing has gone wrong yet. Am I pressing my luck by posting this? Probably. Tempt me not, Fate.
The South Carolina Legislative session resumes Monday after the holiday break. My sister asked if I had any requests, as the Senator gets a laundry list over Christmas, and Denise is the one who filters them out. I requested a passing bar exam, a job with a six figure salary (plus benefits), and Reese Witherspoon. All impossible, according to her.
Au contraire.
If SC Rep. Creips can pass a resolution requesting the Dixie Chicks, I can ask for Reese Witherspoon. That's our republic in action.

The Unholy Tale of "Greasy" Reese Witherspoon
Kevin Smith v. Reese Witherspoon. Many of my closest friends realize I am quite fond of Reese Witherspoon. A few of my cloest friends know that I like comic books, too. One of those who overlaps those two categories thought I'd like this link. It's the story behind Kevin Smith's grudge against dear, sweet Reese. Now, i don't care much for Kevin Smith. He's a vulgar, untalented hack as far as his movies go. But I did enjoy his short run on Daredevil a few years ago. Nevertheless, he has attacked my baby, and that is unforgivable.
Kevin Smith: you, sir, are a ninny.

Legally Blonde II
I saw LB II today with a couple of friends. It was an enjoyable movie--and I do love Reese Witherspoon, but it was mostly fluff to kill a hot summer afternoon.
Elle Woods has a job at a huge Boston law firm and is planning her wedding to Luke Wilson. Elle Wantsto invite everyone to her wedding (at Fenway Park, no less) including her dog Bruiser's long lost mother. Elle hires a pricey PI to track her down. He finds her in a cosmetics research faciliity that her firm represents. When Elle demands the firm force the cosmetics company to stop testing on thedogs, she is fired. Soon sge is inspired to change the law itself and heads off to Washington as a Congressional aide.
Here's where things fall flat. I suppose its largely my own fault for having been involved in politics on the down and dirty level to the point I don't find satirte of it amusing. LB II just didn't sweer politics quite as effectively as the first film ripped into the first year law student experience. Reese's Ms. Amith Goes to Washington" was too idealistic an unbelievable. There more some really good laugh out loud moments, but nothing like the first. Reese was, of course, beautiful as always. No bikini shots here, though. What's up with that?
I liked Bob Newhart's role as a doorman and Washington insider who befriends Elle. He was much more subdued than I would have expeced. It would have been nice if they'd let Bob be Bob. It would have added a how new layerof effective jokes. They did let Sally Fields be Sally Fields, and she played Elle's manipulative, bought and paid for Congresswoman boss with gusto. I'm glad to see her still gettingdecent parts in a town the discards actresses after they hit forty, much less fifty.
If you can accept the instant, idealistic, and unrealistic change Elle has on DC then you'll have a really good time. Reese even almost convinced this old cynical heart. Then again, I think Reese could sell oil to the Arabs, so you are probably asking the wrong guy about that.

Well, There's a Shocker
Reese Witherspoon on how she picks her roles:
"I have a weird process, but the main thing is like this: I hear her voice in my head. There are a lot of wonderful scripts my agents can't believe I pass on, but I do because I can't hear the voice. It doesn't appeal to me then. I'm really careful. Unless I hear the voice, I can't do it."
Why do I always like the odd ones?
