Remember after adding failed country music star to her already long list of embarrassingly bad ventures, Jessica Simpson wanted to take a turn towards the serious? She became the hot of a reality show called The Price of Beauty. The purpose of the show was for Simpson to travel around the world interviewing women about the hardships they have faced in trying to maintain the ideal beauty. Tragic eating disorders, bad plastic surgery…that sort of thing.
The Price of Beauty was picked up by VH1, but barely managed a million viewers for its premiere episode. Nevertheless, the series has been renewed for a second season, with one minor catch--it is no a makeover show.
Talk about missing the point.
The Price of Beauty will be going from its original intent of convincing women to appreciate their natural selves rather than killing themselves in the pursuit of whatever nigh unattainable beauty ideal their respective culture demands to boosting “ugly” women’s self-esteem by painting them up for the sake of ratings.
I would not think much of the makeover theme if it the show had not started out with the exact opposite goal I mind. Every woman wants to be pretty--that is why so many have been killing themselves with bulimia and leaky breast implants--so a makeover show is a point of interest. But have mercy, the hypocrisy of the about face. It is too bemusing for words.
