Alvin Greene Conspiracy Theories Are Bunk

I have gotten several comments on posts regarding Alvin Greene’s surprise win in the South Carolina Democrat primary for Senate. All of this comments are anonymous, which automatically raise suspicions about the commenter agenda. They also all point to the believe Greene is a Republican plant. As a politically astute South Carolinian, I do not buy it.

It is true that voters are allowed to vote in either party’s primary, so some crossover voting happens. The parties are particularly conscious of this. In 2004, Bush 43 was the presidential nominee for reelection, rumors flew that Republicans were going to vote in the Democrat primary to choose the weakest candidate possible. I will confess I went along with it and voted for Al Sharpton myself. (Who better to represent Democrats than a racist imbecile?) So it not only happens, but I have gone along with it.

But this year, there was a hotly contested gubernatorial race that has attracted national attention thanks to the drama surrounding Nikki Haley’s alleged affairs and Sarah palin coming to her defense. The race created two factions of republicans; those excited about the kind of changes a new candidate like Haley ca ring and the old establishment who feel threatened by her rise. Both sides are focused on their faction winning. They we not going to skip out o the GOP primary in order to field a weak Senate nominee in the Democrat primary.

Why would they? Jim DeMint is not going to lose. Even doctored polls by Democrat consultants could not get any potential candidates closer than seven points behind him. DeMint has the backing of the extremely powerful Tea Party and a $ 3.5 million war chest He does not need a weak opponent He is going to coast to victory regardless.

The Democrat party is in shambles in South Carolina and has been for years. Their last major victory was in the governor’s race in 1998 when a relatively unknown “Diamond” Jim Hodges was propped up by the video poker industry. Private interests hired buses to carry people to the polls to vote for him. When Hodges turned out to be a dud, the video poker industry dumped him, so he got pounded by mark Sanford in 2002. Such is the only blip of success the Democrats have had since Carol Campbell established Reagan Republicaism in the Palmetto State.

With few exceptions--parts of the Fifth and Sixth congressional Districts--pretty much anyone can be the democrat nominee for office. The press does not even bother to vet such candidates because there is no reason to take them seriously. As proof, I present Greene, the party’s nominee for Senate.

Face it, people--there is no conspiracy. Greene is an unemployed drifter, probable sexual deviant, and con artist who ha no job or prospects for one, so he decided to run for the Senate. He has been in the military for twelve years, so it is not out of the question he had saved up the $ 10,000 registration fee. He spent next to nothing on his campaign and it paid off for him. Look at what he is saying I every interview--he expects the state and national party to pay for his general election campaign. He just wants the salary of a Senator. I will bet he really thinks he can be granted immunity from his possible conviction on felony obscenity charges if elected, too. It is dumb to think that, but does Greene strike you as an Einstein?

The South Carolina Democrat party can try to pin this embarrassing development on the GOP if they wish, but it is a mess of their own doing. They did not room future leaders. They do not recruit solid candidates. They do not vet the candidates they do run. They get hijacked by special interests like the gambling industry. The state Democrats do not need the Republicans to screw up their party. They are doig it well enough by themselves.
