I have been interested i the national sales tax v. flat tax argument for reform, but I always did so in the context one would replace the income tax. I was not expecting a European-style VAT on top of everything else. But guess what?
A VAT was pretty much inevitable considering the current level of spending Democrats are engaging in. Add I the projected ballooning cost of ObamaCare and it looks likea Vat was all part of the plan. It most likely was. Progressives always buy into the fantasy we can tax our way into prosperity.
It will not work, but it is useless to explain that to them. If all else fails, the Democrats are likely to ram through a VAT as lame ducks if they lose big in November. Otherwise, they will assume they have a mandate and pass it triumphantly.
Do not be too confident a Republican controlled House, assuming there will be one come January, can automatically repeal a lame passed VAT. The democrats have managed to do so much economic and regulatory damage in the last few years, undoing much of it will be a complicated, time consuming task.
