My least favorite character is Michael Dawson. His story arc was poorly executed because he was supposed to be a sympathetic character whom we are shocked by when he takes a dark turn, but cheer for when he redeems himself. The element of the three to effectively come through was the dark turn. The other two aspects of his story fell flat.
Let us face it--the guy was a lousy father. He gave up his parental rights without much of a fight. He was never much interested in his son even on the island. The best wisdom he ever imparted on Walt is that blacks and Koreans hate each other, so brace for it. He even fumbles around for numerous episodes after Walt is kidnapped before he does anything. In the interim, he chews out Sawyer after he got shot trying to save the kid. Nice guy, that Michael.
The highlight of his arc is his shooting of Ana-Lucia and Libby and his betrayal of Jack, Sawyer, Kate, and Hurley. It was interesting solely for the plot advancement, not because it made Michael a more compelling character.
I never felt his redemptive effort as Kevin Johnson was particularly meaningful. Neirher did the powers that be at Lost, apparently. He returned in the sixth season as a ghost trapped on the island for his misdeeds. Michael was not one of the Lostaways in purgatory een though he fit Jacob’s bill as one who had nothing before coming to the island, so his experience there was the most important of his life.
I did not miss him.
