Media Silence on the Nashville Flooding

Nashville suffered major flooding last weekend when torrential rainfall caused the Cumberland river to rise thirteen feet. Over thirty people lost their lives while the flood caused over $1 billion in damages. But you have heard little to nothing about it in the news--certainly not even a fraction as much as Katrina coverage.

Why not?

The answer is simple. The city was ready. The population was prepared. They did not loot. Instead, they banded together to help each other. The governor and mayor were competent. No one wasted time pointing fingers at FEMA. Most importantly, Bush 43 was not around to blame for anything.

The cynical side of me says Barack obama does not care about red state Tennessee’s problems, but I will leave that up to you to decide.

The point is, the flooding in Nashville does not make for a sexy news story quite the way a making a racial issue out of a disastrous hurricane does or an oil company’s mistake in the gulf which causes environmental damage. Keep in mind the former was used to demonize a Republican president and the latter to blast the conservative desire to expand offshore drilling. Business as usual for today’s journalism.

Here’s to an easy and speedy recovery for the people of Nashville. God bless!
